I’ll be moving to a new apartment soon, but before I start searching for a new place, I’d like to post some pictures of Granada. I went there for a few days in December with my friend Lindsay.
Granada is a city in the south of Spain, near Cordoba and Sevilla. It’s a picturesque place in the mountains, dotted with orange trees, cactuses, and caves. Here is a quote from Rick Steve’s Spain 2008 Guidebook that I think sums up Granada pretty well:
¨While modern Granada sprawls (300,000 people), its sights are all within a 20-minute walk of Plaza Nueva, where dogs wag their tails to the rhythm of modern hippies and street musicians¨ (326).
Granada was the last Moorish stronghold in Spain before they were conquered in 1492. One of the main draws is the Alhambra: a Moorish royal palace. To get in, you need to reserve tickets way ahead of time, or get there early and wait in line to buy them. Tickets are expensive, but definitely worth it if you go, as a lot of other attractions are included in the price. Here are some pictures of the Alhambra and surrounding area:

We also saw the Alcazaba, which is the old Moorish fortress:

Then we went to San Nicolás viewpoint to catch a glimpse of the Alhambra at night, all lit up. My blurry pictures don’t do it justice.

There were a lot of people hanging out at the viewpoint. There some teenagers having a botellón and some guys playing with fire. (A botellón is a bunch of people boozing it up BYOB-style at a plaza or on the street. It comes from
botella, the word for bottle.)

The next day we went to visit the monastery and look at the caves (las cuevas). There was a museum of caves. There were also some other little random caves were gypsies and other groups of people had probably squatted, as well as caves that had been converted into homes.

Here are a few other pictures of Granada:
